Children

Our work in Participatory Child Development has been a long journey since 1985 till today. Dimuthu Children Society started in 1985 with the participation of 54 children in a very difficult village. In 1990, the youth subject was added to it and programs were launched with the aim of empowering the sons and daughters of marginalized, underprivileged and poor rural communities and their educational, cultural and social and economic empowerment of families. We organized School based student conferences, leadership and character development, creative talent exhibitions, games, cultural workshops and discussions etc. set the basic background for the development of children. We conducted children camps to develop leadership skills of children, discipline and moral development, positive attitude development, coexistence, development of sports and hobbies, development of education and library facilities, promotion of health and hygiene, promotion of understanding of nutrition and food habits and life skills, mutual friendship and nations One of the main activities was to build friendship between them. From 1985 to 2000, the children & program that moved towards a sweet spring between childhood and adolescence represented the first children parliament held in Sri Lanka in 2000. Also acted as its Provincial Coordinating Organization. As a result of that parliament, we became oriented towards the results-based child participation development strategies
based on children rights. It is also special to receive the technical guidance for that from Save the Children Sri Lanka. In the year 2000, DCYA also worked to start the Southern Province Children Rights Forum and act as its facilitator. All the children classified into various categories such as children subjected to various violence and abuse in the society, orphans and abandoned children, child laborers, children and young people who provide child sex services, children and young people who are victims of violent crimes and drugs, mentally ill children, etc. It was dedicated as an organization to secure all basic human rights from their right to life by inculcating the idea that children have equal rights. Especially with the 2004 Tsunami disaster, the social mission for children expanded
further. Providing psychological counseling services, conducting social integration programs, maintaining care centers and coordinating care services is a huge responsibility assigned to us to take care of children orphaned by natural disasters and alleviate the mental pressure and bereavement complications of children who have lost their parents. . We would like to express our respect and thanks to the international organizations including Save the children who have provided us with exceptional guidance and support for that. Our organization also had the only child-adolescent volunteer group that worked together with the international community for a massive humanitarian service. The Deiherm Kids program started by Mr. Richard Powell (Former Global Director Child safeguard – Save the Children International) for the children affected by the Tsunami was a very interesting program among the children and youth. Children were socialized through a series of activities to develop their own skills and how to use their participation for their own betterment and long-term security.
