Urban Development

This subject will be implemented from the year 2003. As a result of a study conducted by Deiherm with ITDG regarding the use of fuel energy by urban food traders, a regulatory project to increase the efficiency of food products and equipment of urban traders by using energy ovens started in Galle city.

Later, a study on the arrangement and use of bicycle lanes and free bicycles were planned to be agreed upon with the municipality for a bicycle promotion, repair and cycle shed making project.

This project tried to convince the policy makers and the municipal political authority of the importance of developing Galle’s unique use of bicycles as an environmentally friendly means of transportation in preserving the ancient Galle Fort as a world heritage city. Although it was a strategy that could win the tourist attraction of the city, it was not very important to the political authority of the time.

Galle city was severely damaged by the 2004 Tsunami disaster and we have also worked to present our plans as a civil organization in the city’s restoration work.

During the post-tsunami reconstruction and rehabilitation phase, Practical Action with Deiherm has collaborated with Deiherm for 03 years as the Galle Urban Partner Organization of the integrated urban development project launched in Galle and Kurunegala districts in the EU pro Eco Asia – practical action project. During that time, steps were taken to generate many successful community-based methods for municipal solid waste management. Planning for waste classification and marketing from the household level, preparing and implementing regulatory plans by community organizations, producing concrete bins to promote compost production, establishing the Galle Dadalla paper recycling center, introducing a low-cost urban housing scheme to the urban low-income community and Steps were also taken to build.

He also worked to introduce the Citizen Group Network system, becoming an asset to urban governance. This project provided a powerful facility to support policy making and to strengthen community-based organizations and awareness to reduce urban pollution. Regulatory projects have been launched in 08 urban settlements belonging to the Galle Municipal Council.
