Estate and fisheries sector development

Plantation and fishing community development Many of the plantation and fishing communities, which directly contribute to Sri Lanka’s national economy, are dependent on problems for their livelihoods. Although they are victims of various socioeconomic and environmental pressures, the society is accustomed to consider them as an oppressed group with neglect and less privileges. They become a marginalized community in some places and have been limited in terms of receiving human rights and ethnically. Hence we act as an NGO sensitive to their needs and rights. Their careers have been severely affected by the ongoing economic crisis. Even the meager remuneration received by the workers in the plantation sector is depleted due to acute indebtedness. This community has been put under severe stress even during the rise of racist ideologies in the country.

The opportunities for socializing with the rest of the people have been taken up. As an organization, we working with this community have recognized the development of alternative livelihoods as a necessary proof for their economic development. Management of household economy, promotion of saving methods, increasing reproductive health and sex education, problems related to nutrition, violence, child abuse, sexual abuse of women, etc., solutions are required. Actions have been taken to dispel the sexual myths of the plantation youth community and create awareness about HIV/Aids STI and SHSRH and NCD. Among the objective measures are raising the adult literacy of this community, children’s literacy and schooling, care and hygiene, vocational training, etc. The provision of free fishing gear, concessional loans, insurance and real-time training has already been done to small fishing communities and their youth. We are also interested in conflict reduction and religious harmony programs faced by this community.
